Scott and Ophelia were at least partially in her corner. The McCarthy-Latimer house used to have a reputation for having an open door to pretty much anyone in the neighborhood, but again, a lot could change in six years.

Scott was a veteran reporter at the New Orleans paper, and he had given her the job lead. Scott and Ophelia’s house looked exactly the same as it always had for as long as Chloe could remember. She’d walked up and down this street a hundred-thousand times or more as a child, and it looked pretty much the same. Chloe paused at a stop light before turning onto Verret Street. Chloe had known almost everyone in the old neighborhood, but there was no telling who was still around. Although, a lot could change in six years. And hopefully, that would work out well for Chloe and Jackson. It also had a family-type community feel. Like everything in New Orleans, it was old, established, and had countless loveable quirks. The Point, as it was affectionately known by those who lived there, was nestled right in the bend of the Mississippi. There was Algiers, and then there was Algiers Point. The Mississippi River glittered below the bridge, stretching long and wide but disappearing beyond a hairpin bend on the east side, which is what gave Algiers Point its name. The car rolled along, carrying Chloe and Jackson over the twin bridges that connected one side of New Orleans to the other. That included a safe, happy, loving home, even if it was a home made of only two people. Given the circumstances that brought him into the world, she didn’t have a lot to give him, but she would do everything in her power to give him everything he deserved.
